Dianthus commonly called Pinks are garden classics. Abundant and long blooming, they add cheerful color to a sunny border. Perfect for small bouquets.
Dianthus are easy to grow and thrive in a wide range of conditions but require well-drained soil. Best flowering will be obtained in full sun, 6+ hours per day. They can be used in borders, as edgers, in containers—it's hard to have too many Dianthus!
The frilly petal edges of Dianthus appear to be cut with a pinking shears (a type of scissors with a zig-zag blade used to prevent fraying in sewing projects).
Most Dianthus exude a delightfully fresh, clove-like fragrance. Be sure to bring some indoors for bouquets.
No, but there are several advantages to doing so. Deadheading freshens the appearance of Dianthus during its flowering period, but more importantly, removing the faded flowers encourages the plant to rebloom. We love to bring in cut Dianthus for table bouquets and doing so serves the same purpose, encouraging even more blooms to follow!
