Sambucus nigra 'Laced Up® ' (PP29,051 'SNR1292')
Sambucus nigra is a deciduous, multi-stemmed shrub valued for its deeply cut purple-black foliage. In summer, aromatic pink flower clusters attract pollinators. Ornamental fruit favored by birds and wildlife will develop in autumn if another cultivar of Sambucus nigra is near. This adaptable shrub naturally forms a spreading habit and may self-seed in optimal conditions. **Leaves, roots, stems, and seeds of this plant are poisonous if ingested.**
Plant in full sun to part shade, with full sun producing the best foliage color and blooms. While tolerant of various soil conditions, this elderberry prefers consistently moist, humus-rich soil. In late winter or early spring before new growth appears, prune out dead or damaged stems and cut back older branches to ground level. Reduce one-year-old stems by half their length to maintain shape. Remove root suckers throughout the growing season unless naturalization is desired. Regular pruning of the foliage encourages fresh purple foliage growth.
