Lupine are magnificent in bloom and long-lived. Require lots of moisture during hot summers. Lupines dislike lime. If you are having trouble with them, try a few handfuls of peat in the planting hole. Deadheading to prevent seed formation can help with overwintering. Not a good choice for the humid Gulf states. Idaho has restricted all potted plant material from being shipped into Idaho at this time.
Deadheading can prolong blooming. Cut back approx. 6" in mid-late July, then not again until spring to remove winter kill. May require some staking. Needs winter protection in Northern gardens. A light mulch would be beneficial. Division is difficult due to the long tap root, but side shoots can be removed and replanted in the spring.
