Remarkable Color Transformation
Bold, showy blooms make Hydrangea Fire Light striking in any landscape. This easy-care shrub produces large, cone-shaped flower clusters that open creamy white and gradually intensify to rich pomegranate-pink as summer progresses, creating a dramatic, two-toned effect. The strong, upright stems hold their blossoms elegantly above lush green foliage, even after rainfall, ensuring the plant remains attractive well into fall. The long-lasting blooms make excellent cut flowers, fresh or dried, and provide winter interest when left on the plant. Hardy to zone 3, pollinators appreciate this reliable performer as a late-season nectar source. 2019 Hydrangea of the Year.

Botanical Name

Hydrangea paniculata 'Fire Light®' (PP25,135 'SMHPFL')

Hydrangea General Information

Paniculata Hydrangeas are cold hardy, more sun tolerant and superb in the border for summer and autumn display. Blooming on new wood, the flowering is not affected by cold snaps and will bloom consistently every year. Provides winter interest too if flowers are left on. Great for indoor decorating as their flowers are easily dried. Also known as Heteromalla paniculata. Panicle Hydrangeas maintain their natural color progression regardless of soil pH.

Hydrangea Plant Care

Hydrangea paniculata thrive in a variety of conditions. They require well-draining soil and can be planted in full sun. Tolerates clay but does not do well in soggy soil. NOTE: Some afternoon shade is recommended in hotter climates. Pruning is not needed, but shaping can be done to maintain the desired form. Blooms on new wood so best pruned in late winter /early spring - avoiding pruning just before summer blooming. Cut branches back by one-third their total length and remove any crossing branches for strong structure. Maintain a 2-3 inch layer of shredded bark mulch over the roots, and if desired, apply a granular woody plant fertilizer, such as rose fertilizer, in early spring.

Plantable Pots

Our plants are grown in 3.5x3.5x4” plantable pots. Made from 100% biodegradable coconut husk fibers (coir), these pots have tremendous advantages over plastic pots. With better air exchange, this "breathable" pot fosters robust root growth and reduces transplant shock since you can plant the pots directly in the ground. The pot naturally becomes part of the soil on its own over time—no composting required—and since they're made from a renewable resource that requires very little energy, they're earth-friendly too!
