Hibiscus syriacus 'Purple Pillar®' (PP25,568)
Hibiscus syriacus (Rose of Sharon) is a versatile, deciduous flowering shrub native to eastern and southern Asia that typically grows 8-12 feet tall with a vase-shaped, multi-stemmed form. This vigorous plant produces showy, hollyhock-like flowers (2-4 inches in diameter) in various colors from white to pink, red, purple, or blue, featuring prominent center staminal columns. While individual blooms last only a few days, continuous flowering occurs from late summer through early fall. The shrub serves multiple landscape purposes, excelling as a specimen plant, foundation planting, or hedge when spaced 6-12 feet apart. Rose of Sharon particularly shines in pollinator gardens, attracting butterflies, specialized bees, and hummingbirds, and can be trained as a small tree or espalier, making it a popular ornamental choice worldwide. May self sow.
Easily grown in average, medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Best flowering occurs in full sun. Prefers moist, organically rich, well-drained soils. Tolerates poor soils and some drought but not extremely wet or dry conditions. Very tolerant of summer heat and humidity. Generally tolerant of urban conditions. Prune to shape in spring. Spring pruning will encourage flowers on new growth and will increase flower size. If desired (but usually not necessary) can be heavily pruned by removing undesired stems at ground level. Rose of Sharon is late to leaf out in spring, be patient with it.
Our plants are grown in 3.5x3.5x4” plantable pots. Made from 100% biodegradable coconut husk fibers (coir), these pots have tremendous advantages over plastic pots. With better air exchange, this "breathable" pot fosters robust root growth and reduces transplant shock since you can plant the pots directly in the ground. The pot naturally becomes part of the soil on its own over time—no composting required—and since they're made from a renewable resource that requires very little energy, they're earth-friendly too!
