Heliopsis helianthoides var. scabra 'Bleeding Hearts'
Heliopsis is a long blooming, care free, popular native plant for gardens, meadows, and naturalized areas. Covered in cheery blooms on sturdy, well-branched plants and great in mass plantings. Deadheading will prolong the display even longer. The species is valued both for its ornamental qualities and its ability to support local wildlife including butterflies, hummingbirds, pollinators, and songbirds.
Heliopsis helianthoides is a low-maintenance perennial that adapts well to various growing conditions. While it thrives in moist, well-drained soil and full sun exposure, it can successfully grow in less ideal soil conditions. Although drought tolerant, it does not like to be dry for extended periods and benefits from regular watering. No special care is needed but can be divided every 3-4 years during spring or fall to maintain vigor. For compact growth, stems can be cut back by half in late spring before blooming begins. To prevent excessive self-seeding, deadheading is recommended by removing spent flower heads.
