Festuca cinerea 'Elijah Blue'
Festuca cinerea (Blue Fescue) is a compact, evergreen ornamental grass forming dense, rounded mounds typically reaching 6-12 inches tall. Its fine-textured, needle-like foliage displays a striking blue-gray color that intensifies during cool weather. This drought-tolerant grass thrives in full sun and well-draining soil, making it ideal for rock gardens, borders, and containers. Best color is attained in full sun but will tolerate light shade. Ornamental grasses are restricted in Oregon.
Festuca are dwarf ornamental grasses which prefer dry to medium soil, well-draining, with good air circulation. Best color is attained in full sun but will tolerate light shade. Light trimming maintains shape during growing season but leave foliage intact for winter interest and protection. Cut back foliage to 3-4 inches in early spring before new growth emerges. Tease any dead blades of grass by hand combing through foliage. Water deeply but infrequently, especially during establishment and summer dry spells. Divide overgrown clumps every 2-3 years in spring by digging up mound and cutting in half. Division will keep Blue Fescue at its best and prevent any center dieback.
