Botanical Name

Diervilla x splendens 'Kodiak® Orange' (PP27,548 'G2X88544')

Diervilla General Information

Diervilla splendens, commonly known as Bush Honeysuckle, is a hybrid cross between Diervilla lonicera and Diervilla sessilifolia. Appreciated for its attractive foliage and its clusters of yellow, tubular flowers. A multi-stemmed, deciduous shrub with dense foliage and upward and outward growth. The common name Bush Honeysuckle refers to the flowers, which resemble those in the genus Lonicera but are not fragrant. Sometimes confused with Lonicera japonica which is an invasive species to the Midwest. They work well for naturalizing as they spread by suckering and can stabilize slopes and banks.

Diervilla Plant Care

Best grown in evenly moist, well-draining soil. Tolerant of a wide range of growing conditions including clay and drier soils as well as shade. Cultivars with colorful foliage are best grown with plenty of sun. Generally, pest and disease-free. Blooms on new wood and does not require regular pruning. If it starts to get a little sparse as it matures, cut it back to the ground in early spring for a fresh start.

Plantable Pots

Our plants are grown in 3.5x3.5x4” plantable pots. Made from 100% biodegradable coconut husk fibers (coir), these pots have tremendous advantages over plastic pots. With better air exchange, this "breathable" pot fosters robust root growth and reduces transplant shock since you can plant the pots directly in the ground. The pot naturally becomes part of the soil on its own over time—no composting required—and since they're made from a renewable resource that requires very little energy, they're earth-friendly too!
