Delosperma is a low-growing succulent native to South Africa, that produces vibrant daisy-like flowers, often with contrasting centers. It blooms throughout the season, making it a perfect choice for rock gardens, as a ground cover, or green roof application. Evergreen in warmer climates, this drought-resistant plant thrives in dry, full sun areas with poor soil and provides color during the summer. Requires minimal maintenance, making it ideal for containers and difficult garden spots.
Delosperma grows best in full sun and well-draining soil, preferring sandy or gravelly ground that doesn't hold water. Once established, these plants handle drought well but cannot tolerate soggy conditions, with excess winter moisture being their biggest threat. Choose planting locations carefully, with good air circulation and protection from harsh winds. Avoid heavy clay soil, low spots, or areas where water collects. In colder zones, proper winter preparation is crucial: avoid fall fertilizing which promotes tender new growth, stop watering after first frost, and allow plants to go dormant. If using winter protection, choose breathable materials rather than heavy mulch that traps moisture. While some winter damage may occur in colder regions, plants typically recover well in spring, though new growth may emerge slowly.
