Campanula General Information

Campanula portenschlagiana, native to southern Europe (Dalmatian Mountains of Croatia and Herzegovina), is a low-growing, compact plant that spreads to form a dense mat of small, dark green, heart-shaped leaves. It produces an abundance of upward-facing, star-shaped purple-blue flowers that cover the foliage. Its freely spreading habit and long blooming period make it perfect for rock gardens, wall crevices, or as an edging plant. May be semi-evergreen in zones 8-9.

Campanula Plant Care

Easily grown in average, medium, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. While adaptable to various conditions, it performs best with consistent moisture and some afternoon shade in hot climates. Avoid waterlogging. Does not perform well in summer climates where night temperatures consistently remain above 70 degrees F. Division every 3-4 years in the fall or spring helps manage growth and rejuvenate plants. Spreads by both rhizomes and self-seeding under optimum growing conditions. Removing spent flowers stalks will encourage rebloom and discourage seeding (if not wanted). Trim back by 1/3 after the first flush of flowers to freshen the foliage and maintain a tidy appearance.

Plantable Pots

Our plants are grown in 3.5x3.5x4” plantable pots. Made from 100% biodegradable coconut husk fibers (coir), these pots have tremendous advantages over plastic pots. With better air exchange, this "breathable" pot fosters robust root growth and reduces transplant shock since you can plant the pots directly in the ground. The pot naturally becomes part of the soil on its own over time—no composting required—and since they're made from a renewable resource that requires very little energy, they're earth-friendly too!
