Aronia melanocarpa 'Ground Hug® ' (PP31,821 ‘UCONNAM012’)

Aronia General Information

Aronia Ground Hug® was developed by Dr. Mark Brand at the University of Connecticut. Aronia is often called by the common name "chokeberry" because its fruits, while edible, are very astringent. Birds love to feast on the berries and will quickly devour all that remain on this lovely shrub. Aronia is salt and drought tolerant making it useful for erosion control, as well as in mass plantings, in a rain garden, at a pond’s edge, or in a woodland garden. Blooms on old wood and best fruit in full sun.

Aronia Plant Care

Very low maintenance. If desired, but not necessary, prune to shape after flowering. Prefers a sunny spot with well-drained soil. While it can tolerate clay soil, it is suggested that the soil be amended with organic matter like compost to improve its texture and drainage.
