Lonicera periclymenum 'Scentsation' (PP16,240 )
Lonicera (Honeysuckle) have fragrant yellow flowers in spring, surrounded by silver-blue bracts, and red berries in late summer. A single plant can create a captivating vertical accent, while multiple plants can form an impressive screen. This vine is ideal for trellises or arbors, but also looks stunning cascading down from the top of a wall. Hummingbirds, along with many species of long-tongued butterflies, bees, and flies, pollinate the flowers. This fast-growing plant can provide shelter to nesting birds, which also eat the berries.
Lonicera is easy to grow and requires minimal upkeep. Prefers a moist soil amended with organic matter, Honeysuckles will thrive with little care and can adapt to most soils. In hotter climates, most perform best in partial shade. All prefer their roots to be in shade. Lonicera has drought tolerance once established but prefers consistent watering. Train Lonicera on a sturdy structure to provide a solid foundation for the vine. Pruning is only necessary to maintain the desired size or to remove old wood. Prune immediately after flowering. Tangled or long branches hanging down can be pruned at any time.
