A 'Scent'sational Shrub
The heavenly fragrance of Gardenia blossoms that has graced southern gardens can now be grown in zone 6 (with some protection) due to its enhanced winter hardiness. The creamy white six-petaled single blossoms with tawny starfish-like centers are showcased against the glossy green foliage of this compact shrub. Showy seed capsules (hips) in fall add to its appeal. Plant near an entrance or patio to enjoy the memorable aroma of Grif’s Select.

Botanical Name

Gardenia jasminoides 'Grif's Select'

Gardenia General Information

Gardenia are evergreen shrubs with thick, glossy dark green leaves. Best known for their extremely fragrant white flowers. Gardenia jasminoides is synonymous with G. augusta and G. grandiflora.

Gardenia Plant Care

Gardenia do best in a well-drained, humus-rich, acidic soil with partial shade. Prune after flowering to maintain shape. Feed with fertilizer formulated for acid-loving plants in mid-March and again in Late June. Do not fertilize in the fall. Prune after flowering has ceased to remove any straggly branches and faded flowers.

Plantable Pots

Our plants are grown in 3.5x3.5x4” plantable pots. Made from 100% biodegradable coconut husk fibers (coir), these pots have tremendous advantages over plastic pots. With better air exchange, this "breathable" pot fosters robust root growth and reduces transplant shock since you can plant the pots directly in the ground. The pot naturally becomes part of the soil on its own over time—no composting required—and since they're made from a renewable resource that requires very little energy, they're earth-friendly too!
