Campanula punctata-takesimana 'Indigo Blue'
Campanula punctata, native to Japan, Korea, and parts of Russia is a long-blooming, vigorous spreading, perennial featuring large, elegant bell-shaped blooms with distinctive purple spotting inside. The blooms, reaching up to 2 inches long, dangle from upright, arching stems above heart-shaped, toothed foliage.
Easily grown in average, medium, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. While adaptable to various conditions, it performs best with consistent moisture and some afternoon shade in hot climates. Avoid waterlogging. Does not perform well in summer climates where night temperatures consistently remain above 70 degrees F. Spreads freely by both rhizomes and self-seeding under optimum growing conditions. Removing spent flowers stalks will encourage rebloom and discourage seeding (if not wanted). Leave any new fall foliage at the base to overwinter. Pinch when plants are about 6" tall to eliminate need for staking. Division every 3-4 years in the spring helps manage growth and rejuvenate plants.
