Astrantia major 'Roma' (PP11,470)
Flowerheads remain attractive for a long time. Astrantia is an old cottage-garden favorite, but works well in contemporary-style gardens, too. Perfectly suited towards the front of a mostly sunny site or at a woodland edge. Excellent filler plant and cut flower. Reportedly no seed is produced so self-sowing should not be an issue. Clump will widen politely over time.
Astrantia are happiest in a moist soil that drains well and would not be happy in a hot dry site. Can be cut back to new growth at base of plant if foliage declines in hot summers. Leave new basal growth for winter. Reportedly no seed is produced so self-sowing should not be an issue. Clump will widen politely over time. Divide in spring or fall every 4-5 years.
Our plants are grown in 3.5x3.5x4” plantable pots. Made from 100% biodegradable coconut husk fibers (coir), these pots have tremendous advantages over plastic pots. With better air exchange, this "breathable" pot fosters robust root growth and reduces transplant shock since you can plant the pots directly in the ground. The pot naturally becomes part of the soil on its own over time—no composting required—and since they're made from a renewable resource that requires very little energy, they're earth-friendly too!
