Lycoris radiata 'Radiata'
Flowers bloom in fall on naked stems that are long lasting in the garden and in the vase. The basal narrow strap-like foliage grows after blooming and usually lasts through spring when it dies back for a resting period before the next fall flowers appear.
Plant in early fall. Space 6-12" apart and 4-6" deep with the pointed tip facing up, exposing it 1/4 of an inch above the soil. Burying the bulbs below ground level will discourage flowering. Plant in well-draining soil that will not become waterlogged over the summer. In their dormant summer season, it is best if the soil remains fairly dry. Best flowering will occur in partial shade. Harsh winters may diminish flower hardiness. Plant in a sheltered location to prevent winter freezing of the foliage. Mulch for the winter to protect the bulbs from freezing. Bulbs do not like being disturbed and may take a year before they bloom. Lycoris naturalize easily through offsets. These bulbs require an extensive, deep, root system to produce flowers.
