Iris General Information

German Iris, also known as Bearded Iris, is a beautiful and versatile perennial flower with thousands of colorful varieties. It produces large, fragrant blooms in a range of heights and colors, from dwarfs to tall stalks that can reach 3 feet high. Sword-shaped leaves and vibrant flowers make it a great addition to cutting gardens and borders. German Iris spreads by creeping rhizomes which form large clumps over time. Easy to care for, Its stunning blooms appear in spring, sometimes reblooming in late summer, making it a popular choice for gardens worldwide.

Iris Plant Care

German Iris prefers humusy, well-drained soils and full sun, although it tolerates light shade. To prevent soft rot, ensure good drainage and avoid mulching. In heavy clay soils, amend with gypsum or organic matter, or consider raised plantings. Plant rhizomes shallowly, 18-24" apart, in late summer to fall. Fertilize lightly in early spring and avoid overhead watering. After blooming, deadhead spent flowers and remove stems but leave the foliage. Divide plants immediately after flowering every 3-4 years to prevent overcrowding and encourage growth and blooming.
