Fritillaria General Information

Fritillaria imperialis add drama and intrigue to any garden, with their eye-catching unusual shape. Each tall plant stands on sturdy, upright stems, with lance-shaped green leaves and bright, bell-shaped flowers in shades of orange, red, and yellow topped by a small tuft of leaf-like bracts. Their distinct faint odor has a natural advantage in keeping keep voles and other digging pests away. Plant 6-12 bulbs together in the back of a border for a stunning display.

Fritillaria Plant Care

Plant the bulbs 6" deep and 9-12" apart in the fall, laying them on their side to prevent water from collecting in the stem hole and causing rot. Best grown in organically rich, medium moisture, well-drained soil. Perform best in full sun in the north but appreciate some light afternoon shade in hot summer areas. Foliage dies back by early summer as the bulbs go dormant at which point they require less soil moisture Can benefit from a winter mulch. Handle the bulbs gently as they are fragile. Once planted, leave the bulbs undisturbed, as they dislike being moved and can naturalize over time. Visit our Fall-Planted Bulb Guide for more information. *Note: Wear gloves when planting bulbs to prevent any possible skin irritation.
