Fritillaria meleagris 'Meleagris Mixed'
Fritillaria meleagris are native to damp meadows and woodlands. Plants are dainty, featuring one to three, bell-shaped flowers, checkered and veined with reddish-brown, purple, white, or gray snakeskin markings. Lance-shaped, grass-like leaves are widely spaced on slender stems. Long lived and naturalize well. Their distinct faint odor has a natural advantage in keeping keep voles and other digging pests away.
In the fall, plant 3-4" apart and 4" deep in organically rich, well-drained soils in full sun to dappled light shade. Needs consistent moisture throughout the growing season. Foliage dies back by early summer as the bulbs go dormant at which point they require less soil moisture. Can benefit from a winter mulch. Handle the bulbs gently and wear gloves when planting, as they are fragile and may cause skin irritation. Once planted, leave the bulbs undisturbed, as they dislike being moved and can naturalize over time.
