Allium amethystinum 'Red Mohican'
Allium are easy-to-grow and come in a palette of colors, heights, flower shapes and bloom times. They provide long-lasting flowers ideal for bouquets. Flowers dry to tan and often remain upright through winter. All possess oniony smelling flowers and foliage, but ornamental onions are not used for culinary purposes. Butterflies adore Allium, but they are not favored by deer and rodents. Plant in groups or use as an edger in rock gardens or border fronts. Also may be grown in pots. *Please note: We are not permitted to ship Allium to Idaho or the Washington counties of Adams, Benton, Franklin, Grant or Klickitat.
Allium are easy to grow and can thrive in a variety of conditions. The smaller varieties of Allium should be planted 4" deep and the larger varieties 7-8" deep. Spacing 6-8". Do not plant too closely together as they will multiply. They prefer well-drained soil, especially sandy soil, but can tolerate most types. Avoid wet, boggy conditions. May appreciate some light afternoon shade in hot summer climates. Water regularly during the first growing season to establish an extensive root system; once established, tolerates drier conditions. After blooming, let the foliage die back naturally to feed the bulbs for next season. Allium multiply naturally and can be left undisturbed in the same area for years. To control spread, deadhead flowers before seeds set. Clumps may be lifted and divided in either spring or fall. Visit our Fall-Planted Bulb Guide for more information. *Note: Wear gloves when planting bulbs to prevent any possible skin irritation.
