Allium moly 'Moly'
Allium moly is a charming spring-flowering bulb native to southern Europe. Star-shaped flowers appear in loose clusters atop leafless stalks. Flowers are a striking golden color rather than the usual purple or white. Cultivated since the 16th century, is excellent for naturalizing but is ornamental only (not edible). Blue-green straplike leaves will die back in mid-summer. Like other members of the Allium family, it has a mild garlic scent when crushed. Deer, mice, chipmunks, and related wildlife generally avoid Allium. Performs beautifully in rock gardens, border fronts, walkways, cottage gardens, cutting gardens, and naturalized areas, particularly when grown in wide drifts. *Please note: We are not permitted to ship Alliums to Idaho or the Washington counties of Adams, Benton, Franklin, Grant or Klickitat.
Easily grown in average, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. While adaptable to most soil types, prefers sandy loams. Avoid wet, boggy conditions and heavy clay soil. Best in full sun but appreciate some light afternoon shade in hot summer climates. Water moderately during the growing season and reduce after flowering. Quite drought tolerant once established. Will naturalize by both offsets and self-seeding, and a modest planting of bulbs can colonize an area rather quickly. Deadhead flowers before seeds set to help control any unwanted spread. Allow foliage to die back naturally after blooming to feed the bulbs for next season. Can be planted near black walnut trees. Plant bulbs 3-5 inches deep and 2-6 inches apart.
