Echinacea Growing Guide

Part of the daisy family (Asteraceae), it's hard to imagine a sunny perennial border without Echinacea! Coneflowers energize the landscape in a starburst of summer colors that pollinators flock to as well. Add some of these easy-care perennials and enjoy their captivating effects summer through fall.

Why We Love Echinacea

Echinacea are our bestselling Genus for good reason:

  • Pollinators flock to the cone-shaped, nectar-rich flowers.
  • Songbirds are attracted to the seed heads on spent blooms.
  • They're tough, low-maintenance and long-blooming—minimizing garden work and maximizing relaxation time.
  • Once established, Echinacea also tolerates heat and drought.
  • Perky flowers held on sturdy, upright stems are gorgeous and long-lasting when cut for bouquets.

Growing Tips for Echinacea

Echinacea can be planted in spring or fall, in any sunny location. They are so carefree, design options are limitless. Plant some in mixed borders, beds, or as accents in rock gardens. Create a meadow-style garden with mass plantings that include ornamental grasses and other flowering plants. Dwarf varieties of Echinacea are also especially suited to containers.

Deadheading will prevent seeding, but birds are crazy about the seeds, and the seedheads are attractive in the winter, especially in the snow. If removing them, leave the foliage at the base of the plant to overwinter. Echinacea may be slow to emerge in the spring and generally don't need to be divided, but can be divided in early spring or early fall.
