Tough Compact Native
With its extra-bushy habit and refined, small leaves in rich purple-maroon Physocarpus Tiny Wine packs a powerful punch in the landscape. Masses of delicate pink-white flowers appear in rounded clusters up and down the stems in late spring, creating stunning contrast against the foliage, which maintains its deep color throughout the growing season. The naturally dense, manageable size of this native, dwarf Ninebark makes it perfect for foundation plantings, mixed borders, or patio containers. Its mildew-resistant foliage and tolerance for challenging conditions make it an exceptional low-maintenance choice. This heavy bloomer not only attracts pollinators but also provides winter interest with its exfoliating bark and persistent seed heads.

Botanical Name

Physocarpus opulifolius 'Tiny Wine®' (PP26,749 'SMNPOTW')

Physocarpus General Information

Physocarpus opulifolius is a versatile, native, deciduous shrub valued for its adaptability and year-round interest. This easy to grow species features toothed leaves that emerge in spring, followed by rounded clusters of small white flowers that bloom along arching branches, attracting pollinators. The name "ninebark" refers to its distinctive exfoliating bark that peels in layers, providing winter texture and interest. In fall, the foliage turns warm colors, and clusters of reddish seed pods persist into winter. This hardy shrub is found naturally along woodland edges and stream banks.

Physocarpus Plant Care

This tough native plant tolerates a wide range of conditions and thrives with minimal maintenance once established. Plant in a full sun-mostly sunny area, with afternoon shade beneficial in hot, humid climates. While adaptable to most soils, it grows best in average, slightly acidic soil. Drought tolerant once established. Will tolerate some wet soil but performs best in soil that drains well - prevent waterlogged conditions for extended periods. Develops an attractive natural form and looks best when not regularly pruned. If needed, prune immediately after blooming and before mid-August to preserve next year's flowers. For rejuvenation, in late winter to early spring, prune about a third of the branches to the ground to encourage new shoots. Best color in full sun. Foliage may display green tones in partial shade and/or high temps. We grow under shade cloth, so give it time to develop its colorful foliage.

Plantable Pots

Our plants are grown in 3.5x3.5x4” plantable pots. Made from 100% biodegradable coconut husk fibers (coir), these pots have tremendous advantages over plastic pots. With better air exchange, this "breathable" pot fosters robust root growth and reduces transplant shock since you can plant the pots directly in the ground. The pot naturally becomes part of the soil on its own over time—no composting required—and since they're made from a renewable resource that requires very little energy, they're earth-friendly too!
