Fall Flowering and Fragrant
This striking evergreen shrub brings year-round visual interest with its holly-like foliage, marbled in green and cream, that emerges bronze-red to pink in spring - living up to its Japanese name meaning “five colors.” Osmanthus Goshiki produces an intense, sweet fragrance from tiny white flowers in autumn, perfuming the entire garden when many other blooms are fading. The dense growth habit and well-mannered size make it an excellent choice for hedges, foundation plantings, or as a stand-alone specimen. It adapts well to both sun and light shade, making it a reliable and decorative addition to any landscape. RHS Award of Garden Merit.

Botanical Name

Osmanthus heterophyllus 'Goshiki'

Osmanthus General Information

Osmanthus heterophyllus is a broadleaf, evergreen shrub with a dense habit in the olive family. It is native to Taiwan, Japan, and the Korean peninsula. It is prized for its colorful, holly-like foliage and sweet-scented autumn flowers. Flowers are often hidden in the foliage. This versatile shrub works beautifully as a hedge, foundation planting, or focal point in gardens.

Osmanthus Plant Care

Osmanthus heterophyllus prefers partial shade to full sun in moist, well-drained, acidic soils. It tolerates alkaline soils, pollution, drought, heat, and urban conditions. While it tolerates clay, it is essential that the soil is not "boggy" or does not have standing water as this can damage the roots. Appreciates afternoon shade in hot summer climates. Regular watering during the first growing season helps develop a strong root system. If grown in Zone 6, it should be sited in a protected location with a winter mulch. Slow growing and naturally keeps a tidy form, but light pruning in late winter or early spring helps maintain shape. Clip off growing tips to maintain size and encourage bushy growth. When pruning, keep in mind that next season's blossoms will appear on old (this year’s) growth. Heavy pruning may diminish next year’s floral display. Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring. Generally pest-resistant and requires minimal care once established.

Plantable Pots

Our plants are grown in 3.5x3.5x4” plantable pots. Made from 100% biodegradable coconut husk fibers (coir), these pots have tremendous advantages over plastic pots. With better air exchange, this "breathable" pot fosters robust root growth and reduces transplant shock since you can plant the pots directly in the ground. The pot naturally becomes part of the soil on its own over time—no composting required—and since they're made from a renewable resource that requires very little energy, they're earth-friendly too!
