Miscanthus Red Arrow is celebrated as one of the best for colorful red-bronze plumes in autumn. Gently swaying plumes shimmering in the autumn sunlight will cradle glittering diamonds of frost and snow to decorate the garden well into winter.

Foliage and flower plumes provide visual interest in the off season. Miscanthus is equally pleasing as a specimen or planted en masse as a screen. Northern gardeners can achieve the look of Pampas Grass (too tender for the north) with Miscanthus. M. Red Arrow is from Kurt Bluemel of Maryland, renowned for his breeding program of ornamental grasses.

Miscanthus General Information:

Miscanthus are the royalty of the grass kingdom, with billowy texture, silky tassels, many different heights and colorations, and great winter interest. Seeds are carried by a feathery plume above the plant. Pleasing sound when rustling in the wind. Deer resistant. Good for hot dry spots, also dries easily. Ornamental grasses are restricted from Oregon.

Miscanthus Plant Care:

Cut foliage back in late winter before new shoots appear. Divide in late spring when needed. Shear back foliage, divide clumps with a sharp spade, and discard woody centers. Replant divisions and water well. May self sow for our Southern gardeners. Cut off plumes to prevent seeding. Benefits from a well drained winter site.
