Pollinators Love Lupine
Sunshine-yellow spikes, so cheerful and beautiful; Lupines also have the added benefit of being quite deer resistant. From the Mini Gallery™ Series; tightly-packed, sweet pea-shaped blossoms in a breathtaking array of colors invite pollinators to their nectar-rich spires. Flowers in this series appear 2 weeks earlier than other Lupines. No staking needed. Great companion plants for heavy-feeding vegetables like cucumber, squash, cabbage and also fruit trees. Did you know that Lupines can improve the fertility of the soils in which they grow? Plants belonging to the Legume family like Lupines are often called nitrogen fixers. All plants need nitrogen for growing and Lupines are able to take nitrogen from the air with the help of special soil bacteria that live within nodules on their roots and convert nitrogen into a form that can be used by nearby plants. Shipped during our spring season only.

Lupine General Information

Lupine are magnificent in bloom! This charming and vibrant perennial adds a pop of color to any garden. With tall spikes of fragrant, pea-like blooms in shades of pink, purple, blue, and white, lupines attract pollinators and make a stunning statement. Native to North America, they are perfect for cottage gardens, wildflower meadows, or borders. A favorite of gardeners, blooming in late spring and early summer with minimal care required. Well suited for cooler, drier climates- may struggle in high humidity of the South and Gulf states. Lupines are shipped during our spring shipping season only.

Lupine Plant Care

Plant in organically rich, moderately fertile, evenly moist, well-draining soil in full sun. Lupines prefer slightly acidic soils and can be sensitive to high levels of lime. Try adding acidic organic matter like peat moss to the planting hole to create a more favorable growing environment. Lupines grow well where summers are cooler – they may dislike the heat and humidity in the deep South where they are often grown as annuals. In hot summer areas, some light afternoon shade can be beneficial. May need extra watering during hot summers. Apply a light mulch to keep roots cool - mulch should not touch the stem or cover the crown of the plant. Give room around the plant for good air circulation to help avoid powdery mildew. Deadheading spent flower spikes encourages additional blooms. Taller varieties may require some staking. Cut back in mid-to-late July, then not again until spring to tidy up winter dieback. Needs winter protection in Northern gardens. Division is difficult due to the long tap root, but side shoots can be removed and replanted in the spring. Lupines will return for 2 to 5 years under good growing conditions.

Plantable Pots

Our plants are grown in 3.5x3.5x4” plantable pots. Made from 100% biodegradable coconut husk fibers (coir), these pots have tremendous advantages over plastic pots. With better air exchange, this "breathable" pot fosters robust root growth and reduces transplant shock since you can plant the pots directly in the ground. The pot naturally becomes part of the soil on its own over time—no composting required—and since they're made from a renewable resource that requires very little energy, they're earth-friendly too!

100% Guarantee

We offer a 100% guarantee for all our perennials to reach you in good condition and to grow. If you're not satisfied, we'll reship or refund immediately. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have questions or concerns—we share your passion for gardening and want your new plants to thrive in your border!
