Bright Accent for Dark Corners
This graceful, variegated, native evergreen shrub brings year-round interest to shady garden spots with its distinctive foliage in shades of pink, green, cream, and bronze. The arching stems create an elegant fountain-like shape, while clusters of fragrant, bell-shaped white flowers appear in spring, attracting pollinators. Leucothoe Paisley Pup is an excellent choice for woodland gardens, foundation plantings, or mixed borders, where it maintains its neat habit without constant pruning. This tough performer makes an attractive companion to hostas, ferns, and other shade-loving perennials. 2024 Farwest Show Award of Merit.

Botanical Name

Leucothoe fontanesiana 'Paisley Pup®' (PP35,833)

Leucothoe General Information

Leucothoe fontanesiana is a native evergreen shrub valued for its graceful, arching branches and glossy foliage. The species naturally occurs in woodland settings and features dark green leaves that take on bronze-purple tints in winter. Fragrant white bell-shaped flowers appear in spring. This versatile shrub serves well in foundation plantings, woodland gardens, and shaded borders, where it provides year-round structure and interest. Genus name comes from Greek mythology, pronounced lew-KOE-thoe-ee. **Leaves and flowers of this plant are toxic if ingested. **

Leucothoe Plant Care

For best results, plant in partial to full shade with about 2-4 hours of filtered sunlight or dappled shade each day. It can tolerate a few hours of sun in the cooler parts of the day, but it prefers to be protected from the harsh afternoon sun. Thrives in rich, well-draining acidic soil but can tolerate a wide variety of soils. Keep consistently moist but not waterlogged. Regular watering during dry spells promotes healthier growth. Minimal pruning is needed, remove dead or damaged branches in early spring. Fertilize lightly in spring with an acid-loving plant fertilizer. Does not tolerate drought or windy conditions. To ensure overwintering in colder zones, mulch well for the winter and plant in a protected location.

Plantable Pots

Our plants are grown in 3.5x3.5x4” plantable pots. Made from 100% biodegradable coconut husk fibers (coir), these pots have tremendous advantages over plastic pots. With better air exchange, this "breathable" pot fosters robust root growth and reduces transplant shock since you can plant the pots directly in the ground. The pot naturally becomes part of the soil on its own over time—no composting required—and since they're made from a renewable resource that requires very little energy, they're earth-friendly too!
