Iris General Information

Dwarf Bearded Iris are the smallest of Bearded Irises, with a height of up to 18". They are also the earliest to bloom. They are most effective in rock gardens or planted in drifts where they make a carpet of color.

Iris Plant Care

Bearded Iris does best in full sun and when planted in fertile, medium moisture, well-drained soil. While it tolerates some shade it will struggle in heavy clay soil. In heavy clay soils, amend with gypsum or organic matter, or consider raised plantings. Best flowering and disease resistance occur in full sun. Plant rhizomes shallowly (cover with 1/2” soil) and not mulched. Bearded Iris prefers dryer soil; mulching or overwatering could lead to root rot. Fertilize lightly in early spring and avoid overhead watering. After blooming, deadhead spent flowers and remove stems but leave the foliage. Divide plants in mid to late summer immediately after flowering every 3-4 years to prevent overcrowding and encourage growth and blooming.

Plantable Pots

Our plants are grown in 3.5x3.5x4” plantable pots. Made from 100% biodegradable coconut husk fibers (coir), these pots have tremendous advantages over plastic pots. With better air exchange, this "breathable" pot fosters robust root growth and reduces transplant shock since you can plant the pots directly in the ground. The pot naturally becomes part of the soil on its own over time—no composting required—and since they're made from a renewable resource that requires very little energy, they're earth-friendly too!
