Hydrangea General Information

Climbing Hydrangea, native to the woodlands of Asia, is truly glorious to behold. Also known as Japanese Hydrangea or Hydrangea anomala, this vine produces creamy white lace-cap like flowers that extend beyond its glossy green leaves. While initially slow to establish with a shrubby habit, it becomes quite vigorous once established. The vine attaches itself to surfaces using aerial rootlets and requires sturdy support. It is particularly effective when grown on brick or concrete building walls, arbors, fences, large tree trunks, and other robust garden structures. It can also sprawl over low stone walls, unsightly tree stumps or rock piles.

Hydrangea Plant Care

Climbing Hydrangea requires minimal maintenance once established, though patience is needed during the initial 3-4 years while the plant develops a strong root system. Pruning should be done immediately after flowering in late spring or early summer, focusing on removing dead, damaged, or crossing branches and trimming overly long shoots to maintain shape. Since flowers bloom on old wood, avoid heavy pruning. The plant thrives in well-draining, rich soil amended with organic matter and benefits from regular watering during establishment, annual spring fertilization with a balanced fertilizer, and a layer of mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Young plants need protection from harsh winds, and due to the weight of mature vines, support structures should be regularly inspected for stability. May not tolerate heat and humidity of the deep South. Will tolerate full sun with consistently moist soil, will also tolerate some shade.

Plantable Pots

Our plants are grown in 3.5x3.5x4” plantable pots. Made from 100% biodegradable coconut husk fibers (coir), these pots have tremendous advantages over plastic pots. With better air exchange, this "breathable" pot fosters robust root growth and reduces transplant shock since you can plant the pots directly in the ground. The pot naturally becomes part of the soil on its own over time—no composting required—and since they're made from a renewable resource that requires very little energy, they're earth-friendly too!
