Year-round Color
Vibrant coral-red stems create a striking winter display when this compact Dogwood drops its leaves, revealing architecture that glows against snow or evergreen backdrops. During the growing season, Cornus Sgt. Pepper offers creamy white flowers, and striking variegated leaves of green, white, and pink. As nights grow longer in late summer, both stems and foliage take on rich red tones, that intensify with autumn's arrival. Its smaller size and disease resistance make it an excellent choice for modern landscapes where the classic red-twig dogwood might overwhelm the space. Bronze Award KVBC Summer Challenge 2021

Botanical Name

Cornus alba 'Sgt. Pepper' (34,377)

Cornus General Information

Native to Siberia, northern China, and Korea this shrub thrives in challenging spots where other plants struggle, including areas with wet soil or erosion concerns. These hardy shrubs have been popular in gardens for centuries, prized for their winter appeal and adaptability. Perfect for mixed borders, rain gardens, winter gardens, or as a colorful hedge. Also known as Red-Barked Dogwood, Siberian Dogwood, Cornus pumila, and Swida alba

Cornus Plant Care

Plant in full sun to partial shade in moist, well-draining soil. While adaptable to various soil types, it performs best in slightly acidic conditions. Water regularly during establishment and maintain consistent moisture thereafter. Prune in late winter to early spring, removing up to one-third of the oldest stems at ground level to encourage bright new growth. The most vibrant winter stem color develops on young, 1–2-year-old stems so pruning is essential for maintaining the desired effect. Older stems will turn corky and brown. Every 3-5 years cut out 1/3 of the oldest stems. Early spring is the best time to prune. Apply a granular fertilizer formulated for trees and shrubs at pruning time.

Plantable Pots

Our plants are grown in 3.5x3.5x4” plantable pots. Made from 100% biodegradable coconut husk fibers (coir), these pots have tremendous advantages over plastic pots. With better air exchange, this "breathable" pot fosters robust root growth and reduces transplant shock since you can plant the pots directly in the ground. The pot naturally becomes part of the soil on its own over time—no composting required—and since they're made from a renewable resource that requires very little energy, they're earth-friendly too!

100% Guarantee

We offer a 100% guarantee for all our perennials to reach you in good condition and to grow. If you're not satisfied, we'll reship or refund immediately. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have questions or concerns—we share your passion for gardening and want your new plants to thrive in your border!
