Bignonia General Information

Crossvine (Bignoniaceae) is a vigorous, perennial vine native to the southeastern and south-central United States, ranging from Ohio to Texas. In its natural habitat, Crossvine can be found climbing trees in swampy forests and woodlands. Its common name derives from the cross-shaped pattern revealed in its stem's conducting wood. Produces clusters of two to five flowers that serve as a vital food source for hummingbirds. Foliage remains evergreen in the South but may turn reddish purple in fall with subsequent leaf drop in the colder winter areas of its range. In severe winters the above-ground growth may die back and regenerate in spring from the roots. An excellent alternative to the more aggressive trumpet vine (Campsis radicans) while still attracting hummingbirds and butterflies. Note: Not recommended for high fire risk areas.

Bignonia Plant Care

Cross-vine is highly adaptable and can thrive in various conditions, including coastal areas, though it prefers organically rich, well-drained soil. While it can grow in partial shade, better flower production occurs with increased sunlight exposure. The vine requires a sturdy support structure with texture for its tendrils to climb successfully. In colder regions, planting in a protected location with winter mulch is recommended. Prune only after the main spring bloom, as the plant flowers on both old and new wood. Established plants may produce root suckers but these can be removed if spread is undesired.

Plantable Pots

Our plants are grown in 3.5x3.5x4” plantable pots. Made from 100% biodegradable coconut husk fibers (coir), these pots have tremendous advantages over plastic pots. With better air exchange, this "breathable" pot fosters robust root growth and reduces transplant shock since you can plant the pots directly in the ground. The pot naturally becomes part of the soil on its own over time—no composting required—and since they're made from a renewable resource that requires very little energy, they're earth-friendly too!

100% Guarantee

We offer a 100% guarantee for all our perennials to reach you in good condition and to grow. If you're not satisfied, we'll reship or refund immediately. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have questions or concerns—we share your passion for gardening and want your new plants to thrive in your border!
