Rhododendron General Information

Rhododendrons, cherished for their showy, abundant spring blooms, offer reliable early-season color even in cold climates. These evergreen shrubs provide year-round interest with glossy foliage that creates an attractive backdrop for other garden plants. The flowers appear in dense clusters called trusses and are beautiful in cut flower arrangements. Their tolerance for partial shade makes them ideal for brightening corners of the garden or areas near buildings where other flowering shrubs might struggle. Versatile as woodland garden plants, accent specimens, foundation plantings, or in mixed borders.

Rhododendron Plant Care

For best results, plant in full sun to part shade in an area protected from strong winter winds. Plant in rich, well-draining acidic soil with abundant organic matter. Keep roots cool and moist with a 2-3 inch layer of mulch, but keep it back from touching the trunk. Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong root system. Very slow growth rate requires little to no pruning. May be pruned selectively as needed but avoid habitual pruning or cutting back. Simply remove any dead or damaged branches after flowering. Fertilize lightly in spring if needed, using an acid-forming fertilizer formulated for rhododendrons.

Plantable Pots

Our plants are grown in 3.5x3.5x4” plantable pots. Made from 100% biodegradable coconut husk fibers (coir), these pots have tremendous advantages over plastic pots. With better air exchange, this "breathable" pot fosters robust root growth and reduces transplant shock since you can plant the pots directly in the ground. The pot naturally becomes part of the soil on its own over time—no composting required—and since they're made from a renewable resource that requires very little energy, they're earth-friendly too!

100% Guarantee

Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have questions or concerns—we share your passion for gardening and want your new plants to thrive in your border!
