Heuchera x villosa 'Delta Dawn' (PP23,545)
Heuchera are native to North American woodlands, prairies, and mountain regions. They are grown primarily for their colorful foliage, but dainty flowers are held aloft on airy stems in late spring to early summer. These versatile perennials can be used in a border, as an edger, in a courtyard pot, or under deciduous trees. Depending on the climate, Heuchera is an evergreen to semi-evergreen perennial. They will keep their leaves in milder climates or moderate winters but may experience some die-back in colder regions or during severe winters. Cooler spring and fall weather tend to make foliage colors brighter and summer heat may produce a light silver color on some leaves.
Heuchera can be grown in the sun or shade, depending on the selected variety. Foliage color and bloom are generally best in full sun to half shade (4-6 hours of sun per day). Prefers some shade (particularly in the heat of the afternoon) in hotter climates. Varieties with lighter colored foliage need more shade while those with deep saturated or near-black foliage can handle more sun. They prefer a slightly acidic pH and evenly moist, well-drained soils that have been amended with organic matter or compost. They tolerate rocky soil and salt but dislike heavy clay soil. Heuchera are somewhat drought tolerant once established but be sure to provide extra water during hot spells. If grown in full sun, consistent moisture is particularly important. In spring spread a thin layer of a granular, balanced, slow-release fertilizer around the base. In cold climates, watch for frost heaving of the soil – a light winter mulch applied after the ground freezes will help. Heuchera must have good drainage over the winter, though, so don't over-do the mulching. Remove stems of faded flowers to encourage additional bloom. Trim back tattered foliage in early spring to make room for new foliage. Can be divided every 3-4 years in spring.
