2001 Perennial Plant Association's Plant of the Year. Strong vertical appearance. Among the earliest flowering of the grasses, mannerly and attractive all year. Deep green blades with extra fluffy sandy fronds with deep purple accents in June. As the seeds mature the flower stalks turn golden and take on the appearance of shafts of wheat. Calamagrostis Karl Foerster is sterile and will not self-sow.

Calamagrostis General Information

Calamagrostis are prized for the bold vertical accent that they lend to the border. Among the earliest flowering grasses, they are very mannerly and stay attractive all winter. Thrives in clay and wet soils. Ornamental grasses are restricted from Oregon.

Calamagrostis Plant Care

Cut back in early spring to approximately 6-12" before new growth appears. Divide in spring or fall. Attractive seedheads add winter interest and provide food for the birds.
