Waldsteinia ternata 'Ternata'
Waldsteinia Ternata are ornamental, strawberry-like plants native to Europe and Asia that form a dense, weed-smothering carpet with shiny leaves and yellow buttercup flowers. The foliage is evergreen in mild winter areas. Easy to maintain and adapts to most soil types. Small red berries are not edible. Spreads by runner-like rhizomes but is not considered aggressive. Plant along a rock wall or a path. Combines well with spring blooming bulbs in English, fairy, or shade themed gardens.
Plant in a cool. partial to mostly shady site (2-6 hours of indirect sunlight). In the south, it does better with some afternoon shade. Tolerates a wide range of soils but grows best in average, medium moisture, well-drained soil. Does not like to be in standing water for extended periods. Thrives in soil with organic matter like compost. Best in an area sheltered from strong winds. Can be divided in spring or fall. Is drought tolerant once established but does not tolerate heat & humidity. Pruning is usually not necessary, but if needed, avoid trimming more than 1/3 of the plant.
Our plants are grown in 3.5x3.5x4” plantable pots. Made from 100% biodegradable coconut husk fibers (coir), these pots have tremendous advantages over plastic pots. With better air exchange, this "breathable" pot fosters robust root growth and reduces transplant shock since you can plant the pots directly in the ground. The pot naturally becomes part of the soil on its own over time—no composting required—and since they're made from a renewable resource that requires very little energy, they're earth-friendly too!
