Sambucus nigra is a deciduous multi-stemmed shrub grown primarily for foliage color. Ornamental fruit will develop in autumn if a pollinator is near. Prefers a moist soil but will adapt to dry soils.
Idaho has restricted all potted plant material from being shipped into Idaho
at this time.
Responds well to hard pruning each spring while dormant. Cut back older stems to the ground and one-year old wood by 1/2. Remove suckers at the base as they appear. Sambucus blooms on old wood.
