Phlox divaricata 'Louisiana Blue'
Phlox divaricata are mildly fragrant, carefree natives for part shade. This species naturally occurs in woods, fields, and along streams. Foliage forms a creeping mat of loosely entwined stems with semi-evergreen oblong leaves. Loose clusters of slightly fragrant, lilac to rose to blue flowers appear at the stem tips in spring. Can form large colonies over time as leafy shoots spread along the ground rooting at the nodes. Combine with spring flowering bulbs in rock gardens, border fronts, under taller plants, native plant gardens, or naturalized areas.
Best grown in rich organic, medium moisture, well-drained soil in part shade to full shade. Prefers rich, moist, organic soils. Appreciates a light summer mulch which helps retain moisture and keep roots cool. Trim back after flowering to the low green foliage for lush new growth. Do not prune in fall, may need minimal clean-up in spring to tidy its appearance. Can be divided every 3 to 5 years in spring right after flowering or early fall.
Our plants are grown in 3.5x3.5x4” plantable pots. Made from 100% biodegradable coconut husk fibers (coir), these pots have tremendous advantages over plastic pots. With better air exchange, this "breathable" pot fosters robust root growth and reduces transplant shock since you can plant the pots directly in the ground. The pot naturally becomes part of the soil on its own over time—no composting required—and since they're made from a renewable resource that requires very little energy, they're earth-friendly too!
