Orchid-Like Flowers
Exotic flowers nestle near stem tips atop crisp bright-green foliage. The bi-colored white hooded flowers flash a plum-purple lower lip hemmed with a lacy-edged white scallop. Foliage is heavily veined for a quilted look. Flowers and foliage both emit a honey scent. With its nectar/pollen rich flowers, Melittis Royal Velvet Distinction is a valuable pollinator attractor. Commonly called Honey Balm, it is best suited to dappled shade in a moist and well-drained soil.

Melittis General Information

The scientific name Melittis means honeybee and is commonly called Honey Balm. Quite attractive to bees and butterflies. Melittis are mounding perennials with downy foliage and both foliage and flowers are sweetly scented. Ideal for the perennial border, edging a woodland path or in containers. Idaho has restricted all potted plant material from being shipped into Idaho at this time.

Melittis Plant Care

Plant in groups for most impact. Best suited in moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil with dappled shade. In warmer zones, place in some shade with hot afternoon sun.
