You can't go wrong with the classics! These tried and true varieties are our staff's top picks for gardeners looking for low maintenance plants that will dazzle in the border.
Campanula glomerata 'Joan Elliot'
Campanula glomerata, Native to Europe and Asia, is an upright perennial that produces spherical clusters of bell-shaped, violet-purple flowers atop sturdy stems over dense, somewhat hairy, foliage. Its compact growth habit and reliable blooming make it a popular choice for borders, cottage gardens, cutting gardens, rock gardens, and pollinator-friendly landscapes.
Easily grown in average, medium moisture, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. Full sun is best in cool northern summer climates. Prefers part shade in hot summer climates. Needs regular moisture. Removing spent flowers stalks promptly will encourage rebloom and discourage seeding (if not wanted). In late fall, cut plants back to ground level. The plant can spread vigorously through underground runners, so divide clumps every 2-3 years in fall to maintain habit and control spread.
Our plants are grown in 3.5x3.5x4” plantable pots. Made from 100% biodegradable coconut husk fibers (coir), these pots have tremendous advantages over plastic pots. With better air exchange, this "breathable" pot fosters robust root growth and reduces transplant shock since you can plant the pots directly in the ground. The pot naturally becomes part of the soil on its own over time—no composting required—and since they're made from a renewable resource that requires very little energy, they're earth-friendly too!
