Dramatic Beauty with Remarkable Resilience
With finely cut, deep purple-black foliage, Sambucus Black Lace adds sophisticated elegance and drama to any garden setting. In early summer, large clusters of soft pink blooms appear, filling the air with a sweet fragrance that attracts pollinators. When planted near another cultivar of Sambucus nigra such as Black Beauty®, Instant Karma®, or Laced Up®, these flowers develop into dark purple berries beloved by birds. Maintains its rich color best in cooler regions but may appear more green in hotter zones. Offers the delicate appearance of a Japanese Maple with rugged tolerance of drought, deer, and Black Walnut. 2012 RHS Award of Garden Merit, ANLA #1 New Variety for 2006, Royal Boskoop Horticulture Society Silver Medal 2006.

Sambucus General Information

Sambucus nigra is a deciduous, multi-stemmed shrub valued for its deeply cut purple-black foliage. In summer, aromatic pink flower clusters attract pollinators. Ornamental fruit favored by birds and wildlife will develop in autumn if another cultivar of Sambucus nigra is near. This adaptable shrub naturally forms a spreading habit and may self-seed in optimal conditions. **Leaves, roots, stems, and seeds of this plant are poisonous if ingested.**

Sambucus Plant Care

Plant in full sun to part shade, with full sun producing the best foliage color and blooms. While tolerant of various soil conditions, this elderberry prefers consistently moist, humus-rich soil. In late winter or early spring before new growth appears, prune out dead or damaged stems and cut back older branches to ground level. Reduce one-year-old stems by half their length to maintain shape. Remove root suckers throughout the growing season unless naturalization is desired. Regular pruning of the foliage encourages fresh purple foliage growth.

Plantable Pots

Our plants are grown in 3.5x3.5x4” plantable pots. Made from 100% biodegradable coconut husk fibers (coir), these pots have tremendous advantages over plastic pots. With better air exchange, this "breathable" pot fosters robust root growth and reduces transplant shock since you can plant the pots directly in the ground. The pot naturally becomes part of the soil on its own over time—no composting required—and since they're made from a renewable resource that requires very little energy, they're earth-friendly too!
