Mounds of clover-like blue green foliage is the base for the blue-lavender lupine-like flowers in early summer. Baptisia Australis has black seed pods formed in fall that are a good counterpoint in cut flower arrangements. A carefree plant. P.P.A. Plant of the Year 2010.

General Information:


Baptisia are extremely long-lived. Give it plenty of room as it will be 3' tall and just as wide. Flower spikes rise above the upright, vase-shaped habit graced with pea-shaped blossoms. Fall brings added interest with black seedpods highlighting the bluish-green foliage.

Plant Care:


Can be slow to establish but will reach shrub like proportions. Good in poor soils. Dislikes being moved when mature. Late fall or spring cleanup may be preferred. Cut to 4-6" when foliage blackens with the cold.
