Botanical Name

Hydrangea quercifolia 'Gatsby Star' (PP25,412)

Hydrangea General Information

Hydrangea quercifolia / Oakleaf Hydrangea, are noted for producing cone shaped clusters of flowers that transition in color from creamy white to green and pink with foliage that resembles large Oak leaves. In cooler climates they can tolerate full sun. In warmer climates, they prefer some afternoon shade.

Hydrangea Plant Care

Hydrangea quercifolia thrives in partial shade to mostly sunny locations. Can tolerate full sun, especially in cooler climates. In warmer climates, they prefer some afternoon shade to prevent leaf scorch. Plant in a location with good air circulation, rich, well-draining soil and consistent moisture. Dead or damaged branches can be removed in early spring, but minimal pruning is needed. Any desired pruning should be done after flowering but before August to avoid damaging next year's flower buds. Apply a balanced fertilizer in spring and mulch around the base for winter protection.

Plantable Pots

Our plants are grown in 3.5x3.5x4” plantable pots. Made from 100% biodegradable coconut husk fibers (coir), these pots have tremendous advantages over plastic pots. With better air exchange, this "breathable" pot fosters robust root growth and reduces transplant shock since you can plant the pots directly in the ground. The pot naturally becomes part of the soil on its own over time—no composting required—and since they're made from a renewable resource that requires very little energy, they're earth-friendly too!
