Tall spikes of gold flowers with yellow filaments
Tall spikes of gold flowers with violet stamens over basal grey green felty leaves. Verbascum is a long-lived perennial. Unique looking, sure to turn heads. Once known as the Candlewick plant when stems were dipped in oil and used as a torch; however, we suggest just enjoying its dynamic display. Easy to grow. Spring Shipping Only.

Verbascum General Information

Verbascum are bold plants with large velvety foliage. Flowers are atop towering spikes held well above the foliage. Idaho has restricted all potted plant material from being shipped into Idaho at this time.

Verbascum Plant Care

Prefers a lean, alkaline well-draining soil. Avoid highly fertile and wet soils. Mature clumps do not respond well to division. Instead, pluck out a few seedlings in spring and transplant. Allow some seeds to fall if volunteers are desired. Removing flower stalks after blooming can increase vigor for over-wintering. Taller forms benefit from staking.

Plantable Pots

Our plants are grown in 3.5x3.5x4” plantable pots. Made from 100% biodegradable coconut husk fibers (coir), these pots have tremendous advantages over plastic pots. With better air exchange, this "breathable" pot fosters robust root growth and reduces transplant shock since you can plant the pots directly in the ground. The pot naturally becomes part of the soil on its own over time—no composting required—and since they're made from a renewable resource that requires very little energy, they're earth-friendly too!
