Golden mounding variegation really brings a bright spot to shaded areas. The variegation is more pronounced in part shade and will take on more of a lime-green color if placed in full shade. Hakonechloa Aureola spills nicely over edges of walkways or low walls. Perennial Plant of the Year 2009.

Hakonechloa are one of the best ornamental grass choices for shade. Likes a moist humusy soil, and good drainage. Ornamental grasses are restricted from Oregon.
If division is desired it should be done in the spring as new growth develops. In Northern zones plants will benefit from a layer of mulch for winter.
